UK MAMS OPEN GOLF
COMPETITION 2006
For the 3rd
year running 24 up and coming golfers met at the Abbey G & C Club, Redditch.
Again the weather god’s were on our side and although both rounds were played in
dry conditions, previous heavy usage of the course did make putting somewhat of
a lottery. Coupled with this was the hindrance of following very slow play
resulting in the last few 4 balls finishing in darkness on the Sunday………but in
some cases it didn’t make any difference!!!!!!! Any frustration was soon
forgotten in the bar as we caught up on each others news, before having our
earliest night to date……..02:45 !!!
Monday’s round was
played much quicker but with some hazy heads and concluded with a small prize
presentation on the balcony overlooking the 18th green. Generally the
prizes were well distributed although one name did appear more than once…..Dave
“Digger” Barnes, winning the Stableford 1st, Best Gross, a Nearest
the Pin and sharing in the “Two’s”, in other words, a free weekend ???? Other
winners were, Ian Dewar, Kev Jones, (on his farewell appearance ), Richie
Campbell, Ade Tew, Stu Askew and Richie Collins with Rik Morgan taking the
coveted “ Most Golf Played “ prize.
Once again my
thanks to the Association and the Squadron for their donations and personal
thanks to Neil & Kev Jones, cheers again guys.
To conclude this
article I would like to reiterate what I said at the prize giving. Taking many
things into account, such as being out of the R.A.F. for 8 years, the way the
Sqn is moving forward, especially in the last year or so, I feel that in the
last 3 years I have taken this particular event as far as I can. It is now time
for someone “nearer home” to take the reins and the Mams Open to the next
level.
My thanks to all
participants over the last 3 events and I look forward to “smacking “a ball with
you in the future.
Please do not let
tradition die.
Best Wishes
Dougie B
