To set up and maintain a competitive
Movements Trade 18 Rugby Union team, for friendly fixtures, for tournaments
both Civilian and Service such as the Cyprus 10’s and possibly entry to the
RAFRU cup……… And to have a good social and a bloody good laugh.
Who is it for ?
Anybody who wishes to get involved
and help out in any way whatsoever. From players to people who want to come
to the fixtures and have a good time and watch some sportsman in the RAF not
taking themselves too seriously, but at the same time giving the opposition
a lot of problems, and later a few headaches.
In this
newsletter we will give you a brief outline of where we are in the overall
scheme of things and what happens next.
After putting out the flyers around the better known Movements Squadrons we
had a slow but positive response and managed to get together enough interest
to start to take the team a bit more seriously than a few lads sitting
around talking a good game. So with this we organized the first training
session for the people at Lyneham, and we got……………………………………………..6.
Not much to scare many clubs into cancelling fixtures in fear but
a start nonetheless. Since then things have definitely improved and we have
had around 30 different players attend training throughout the past two
months, some experienced ex players who have played to a reasonable standard
and many who fancied seeing what all the fuss was about and dragged
themselves down to play rugby for the first time. As with all training we
have a good nucleus of regulars that are improving all the time and enjoying
themselves at the same time and people attending as and when work permits.
The problems begin……..
So after around three months of
training at least once a week, the lads wanted to see how we were coming
along and we decided to try and get someone to play us, none of the
Squadrons are interested. We’ll have a game between ourselves, even ten
aside, we’ve got enough players…..great idea. STOP EVERYTHING.
Under the new policy of the RAF we are not aloud to take 20 grown men onto a
rugby pitch and play rugby even with uncontested scrums and all being
“mates” and the same trade, but you can with a football. We also are not
allowed to play even if we have a qualified referee because the team is not
insured. Call in the problem solvers.
The solution to the current problem………………….
Geoff Williams and Shorty Mills travelled down to the RAF festival of rugby
at Newbury, where they spoke to the Sqn Ldr in charge of the board of Royal
Air Force rugby. Along with Kev Skinner they spoke about what we are trying
to do and the problems we are encountering, and he provided the solution,
that to start with we register as Lyneham thirds for the insurance purposes
and then send an application to the RAFRU board for when it sits in June,
attached to this we will be sending a list of names of all Movers who have
expressed an interest in representing this team in whatever form we desire.
Also to get round the problem of referees I have spoken to Sqn Ldr
Chris Goss at High Wycombe who is a B3 qualified referee and has many
contacts around to help us keep fixtures by having the proper officials
present.
Next………………..
We are currently looking at a fixtures for the near future but if
not for the start of next season against stations as there warm up games,
kit, memberships and rules of the club will follow when we have some firmer
details from the meeting in June.
If you wish to get involved please contact Geoff Williams
on 6488 or Tug Wilson on 7232 at Lyneham.
