The Liaison Office rose from the ashes of
RAF Brüggen and consists of the following personnel:
1 x RAFLO (Flt Lt)
1 x DRAFLO (WO)
1 x FS
1 x Sgt
3 x Cpl’s
8 x SAC’s (inc 2 x Mov Op)
Only a few years ago
this small detachment at Hannover Airport only had to contend with a
bi-weekly charter to Stansted and a few Off Base Tasks (OBT’s) to Paderborn
and Münster and the odd AT/VIP aircraft thrown in for good measure. Having
to deal with ‘contract monitoring’ of the civilian check-in staff and
filling out F1771’s were normal daily tasks. EX MEDMAN back then meant a
busy period of aircraft numbers in the double figures, sometimes more than
one on the same day!!
Many changes have happened at Hannover
since those times and as is the same for many of us in the trade OP TELIC
had a big bearing on how we now operate. Gone are the scheduled charters
into Stansted, replaced by a daily part charter which we have minimal
dealings with, and along with that went the ‘contact monitoring’ of the
check-in staff. The easy life was about to disappear!
Of course the charters didn’t completely
go; we were soon inundated with Antonovs,
Ilyushins, B747’s etc etc. Hang
on, hang on, all of a sudden we have to earn our LAO!! TELIC 1 finished and
we thought “Phew, I’m glad that’s all over!”, then what happened……TELIC 2,
3, 4 etc etc. The overused phrase out here is “Don’t worry, it’ll quieten
down next month”. Well, just like tomorrow, next month never comes!
It’s not all doom and gloom though,
Hannover gives the guys and gals posted here the opportunity to get a lot of
hands on experience in many aspects of the trade, a lot of which people
don’t get to do at just one unit. Another plus point to this posting is the
travel opportunities (if you can get the leave!!). Germany has a lot to
offer, what with Hamburg only an hours drive north of here and Berlin less
than 3 hours drive east. The Hartz Mountains are only a hop skip and a jump
away for all of your skiing and snowboarding needs in the winter and walking
and climbing in the summer. Further south sees the Black Forest and the
rest of south east Europe beyond. Of course with more and more airlines
putting on ‘no frills’ flight options, it’s just getting easier to get
around.
