Charity Football Match
Well, may I have the pleasure of introducing to
everybody the Joint Movements Squadron (JMS) Charity Football Teams. On the
left hand side of the photograph,
we have the Juniors team and on the right the Seniors team.
This annual event of Seniors Versus Juniors football
match was organised by Sgt “Bugsy” Felstead and Cpl “Taff” Evans. But, the
game was somewhat special this year because not only was there pride
involved but we also used the event to raise some much-needed cash for the
Tsunami Appeal. We charged C£5 to play per person and the losing team would
face a further financial penalty, a loser’s fee of another C£5 (An incentive
to win or what).
During the game, yellow cards were unlimited and
incurred a further financial penalty of C£5 for anybody who managed to pick
up one, two or three cards (and everybody would like to thank Sgt “Cammy”
Campbell for being so charitable and picking up the most yellow cards, three
in total).
Nobody realised how keen the referee was on charity
because with only three minutes of play there was a yellow card dished out
to Cpl “Gunner” Evans for a dubious foul on FSgt “Si the Actor” Hobbs.
After this little incident the game continued at such
a furious pace (it was like watching a Sunday league game back in the UK).
The first twenty minutes possession belonged to the Juniors team, but for
all the good attacking play there was still no score.
This was due to the stalwart defending of the Seniors
team, plus the thought of the extra C£5 charge if they lost.
But the heart of the Seniors defence was pierced open
by a cross ball from Sac “Dai” Pike and Sac “Flipper” Wright was there to
put the ball away with a precision header. After that goal the Seniors had
only a few expeds into the Juniors half but they could not find that elusive
equalizer, in fact the Juniors had a breakaway chance which ended up with
Sac “Richie” Bowman having a shot on goal, which wickedly deflected off Sgt
“Bob” Raisebeck and managed to squeeze past the goalkeeper (FSgt “Dale”
Walker).
During the game both sides used up all their
substitutes, thanks too a rolling subs procedure.
One of the subs for the Seniors team was Sgt “Bugsy”
Felstead (AKA The Cat). The Cats claim to fame during this game was that he
did not concede any goals during his time in between the sticks, which
leaves FSgt “Dale” Walker with all the bad stats.
The final period saw the Juniors running in a further
three goals from Sac “Richie” Bowman, Sac “Dai” Pike and Sac “Wally”
Campbell. The Seniors team were still pushing hard for that one consolation
goal to give them something to talk about in the bar after the game.
Although the Seniors had little opportunity and
possession there was a man who was playing some good football and also
raising lots of money for charity by giving us such an excellent display of
diving. He could have easily got Gold in last years Olympics. This
champion for Charity is Capt “Nick” Loader.
So the final result was:
Seniors 0 – Juniors 5
24 Yellow Cards.
The total money raised for the Tsunami Appeal was
C£410, but the Squadrons Social and Welfare fund are going to top this
figure up to make the total amount raised as C£500.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank
everybody who was involved with the day, as it was enjoyed by all and we
managed to raise a good amount for charity (and the excuse for beer and
curry afterwards was very welcome).
